Librarians for Critical Digital Justice

Image depicts a human being controlled by social media applications. There is text that states the following: "Online Webinar. March twenty third, twenty twenty three. Hashtag Critlib versus Tech. Librarians for Critical Digital Justice, hosted by Naomi Smith. U.C.L. Information Studies. Celebrating one hundred years.

This past March 2023, I was honored to have been an invited speaker for “Librarians for Critical Digital Justice,” a webinar sponsored by the Department of Information Studies at the University College London. In this virtual space, I gave a presentation titled “Leveraging Critical Literacies to Orient Social Justice-Minded Teaching Practices in Digital and Data Librarianship.” My talk was an offshoot of my Journal of Critical Digital Librarianship journal article that explores the overlapping goals of different critical data-oriented literacies. I also discuss how these perspectives/literacies open the opportunity for confronting systematic forces within librarianship itself (tensions between different librarian roles, DEIA barriers, and unequal distribution of resources).

The recording for the entire webinar can be found on YouTube (closed captions in English): https://youtu.be/d8h1AREn5t0
