Delighted to be participating in and coordinating a workshop series (see bit.ly/NECQUAL2026) as part of the newly formed Northeast Carpentries Community. In collaboration between the University at Buffalo, Columbia, Harvard, and the University of Rochester, we’ve joined forces to pilot two introductory Carpentries lessons centered around open-source tools for coding and analyzing qualitative data: Taguette and QualCoder. What makes this project especially meaningful to me is that it reflects what I value most about cross-institutional collaborations centered around teaching/learning: their ability to bring together a rich diversity of expertise and perspectives while also enriching academic libraries’ offerings for their respective patrons. Part of what will be taught includes an in-house-created primer on working with qualitative data, and most of the curriculum will draw from lessons tied to the IMLS-funded Open Science project.
